DeepSeek vs Free ChatGPT for Emails and Research: Which One Answered
I used both for research questions and email drafts. Free ChatGPT won because it always answered. DeepSeek sometimes said its server was busy, and slow replies took 10 to 30 seconds.
Short answer
For everyday questions and email drafts, use free ChatGPT. It answered every time I asked. DeepSeek is worth opening when you want to see the reasoning behind an answer, but expect a server-busy message or a slow reply now and then.
| For my daily work | DeepSeek chat | Free ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | Free |
| Answered when I asked | Not always: server busy or slow | Always |
| Wait on a slow reply | 10 to 30 seconds | No busy waits for me |
| What I liked | Seeing its reasoning steps | It kept working |
| Where your chats are stored | China, per its policy | Not checked here |
| My pick | No | Yes |
Over the last 1 to 3 months I used DeepSeek's chat and free ChatGPT for the same two jobs: questions and research, and writing emails. Free ChatGPT did the work better for one plain reason: it always answered. DeepSeek sometimes said its server was busy or went slow, and when that happened I waited 10 to 30 seconds for a reply. The one thing I liked more in DeepSeek was seeing its reasoning steps.
Why the busy server decided it
An email draft is a two-minute job. If the tool stalls in the middle of it, you lose your train of thought. ChatGPT never did that to me, and that is why it won.
I did not compare the quality of the two tools' drafts side by side. My verdict rests on getting an answer at all.
Where DeepSeek earned its tab
DeepSeek shows the steps it took before it gives the answer, so you can follow how it got there. For a question you will act on, that is worth a slower reply.
Before you paste work into DeepSeek
DeepSeek's privacy policy, last updated 10 February 2026, says it collects, processes and stores personal data in the People's Republic of China. It also lists training its technology as one use of what you type, and gives you a right to opt out of that. If your emails hold client details, read that page before you paste them in.
Chat app or local model?
The chat app is a different thing from running DeepSeek on your own machine. I tried the local route too, and my DeepSeek Coder setup on Ollama took 2 to 3 hours to set up and still gave slow replies. For quick daily work the chat app is the easier start, busy messages and all.
Other options
Has a free plan. I pay for Claude Pro.
Has a free tier. I pay for a Gemini plan, and it suits you if your mail and files are already in Google.
Runs on your own computer, so nothing leaves it. Expect setup time and slower replies on a small GPU.
